Satellite Broadband at Càrn Bàn, Staffin

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Satellite Broadband?

Instead of being connected to the internet by a telephone line, satellite broadband uses a satellite in geo-stationary orbit in outer space above the earth, and a satellite dish, to connect to the internet. The satellite dish (on the side of the house in the photograph) is both a receiver and a transmitter. Some services are just one way, such as the receive only Sky TV service, whilst the facility we use at Carn Ban is two way - sending and receiving via the satellite connection.

What is provided?

The service available to anyone staying at Carn Ban allows for a laptop with a network card to be connected to the box which is connected to the satellite. You should bring with you a network cable, or patch cable or RJ45 connecting cable, which connects the network card in your computer to the box. Unfortunately we cannot support your own equipment and how to connect it to the system. We cannot guarantee the level of service available with the satellite connection as we are dependant upon BT who offer the service to the property. The BT Satellite helpdesk is 0845 601 5919.

What is the email address?

We suggest using your existing pop3 account via a service such as www.mail2web.com using the Internet Explorer on your Laptop PC or iBook.

What technical information do I need for my IT department?

If you are being advised by your organisation's IT department, all you need to say to them is that you will be connecting to a static IP address via a network card in your Laptop PC or iBook. For more information contact the BT Satellite Broadband helpdesk on 0845 601 5919 if you are concerned about compatibility issues.
